What an amazing man Jack Spratt was! Not only did he build the amazing clock at St Andrew’s Church in Wootton Rivers, but he was also postman, church warden, repairer of mechanical items, clock maker, music box maker, accounts clerk, rates collector, suit maker and boot and shoe shop owner. In his spare time, he enjoyed writing poetry and wrote about his life in ‘The Scrap-heap Clockmaker of Wootton Rivers’.
All this, and much more information including photographs, the history of St Andrew’s Church and the village, can be found on the newly-installed information board in the church porch. It really is fascinating and, once read, the clock and Church can be admired even more.
