Bedwyn Brail & Wilton Brail

On the eastern flank of Wilton lie the ancient woodlands of Bedwyn and Wilton Brail which were formerly part of the Savernake Estate (see Savernake Forest).

The main features of interest are:

  • a Roman Villa site (Scheduled Monument),
  • a Tudor Conduit providing a water supply to a house that Edward Seymour was planning to build in the woods (see Wolfhall),
  • and an avenue laid out in the late 1700s as part of a landscape scheme radiating out from Tottenham House.

The woodlands, which have been embellished by subsequent owners over the years, are mainly broadleaf in character and have interesting flora and fauna. There is an extensive network of well-maintained public footpaths in both woods.
