Kennet & Avon Canal Share the Space ImageThe Canal & River Trust has launched a campaign to encourage people to be considerate in their use of the canals and Share the Space.

The towpaths were originally created for horses to walk along as they pulled the barges, so they aren’t really designed for all the different leisure activities we use them for nowadays.  As well as people who live on the Canal using the towpath for access, you’ll see walkers, cyclists, runners, anglers, kayakers, canoeists, photographers, artists, dogs, wildlife, horses – it can get very busy!

To make the point about sharing the space, the Canal & River Trust has also installed Duck Lanes on some towpaths, so keep an eye out for them!

Have a look at their website to find out more about the Towpath Code and see what a Duck Lane looks like.
